Per your telephoned request of 3 October 1978, attached are two documents copied from MKULTRA Sub- Project #20, dated 27 November 1953 and 18 November 1953. These documents relate to a contractual arrangement for the production of the "di-Mannich of yohimbine" from two pounds of yohimbine hydrochloride. Please note that in their present unsanitized form, these documents are con- sidered classified. 2. There is nothing in the file to indicate the rea- son for making this compound nor for the interest in yohimbine. As a result of this request, two references were checked: A. Clinical Toxicology of Commercial Products, Gosselin, Hodge, Smith and Gleason; 4th Edition, 1976: "Once reputed to be an aphrodisiac, but it has no proved therapeutic uses." B. Physician's Desk Reference; 31st Edition, 1977: "Andro Medicone (Reg. T.M.) tablets containing yoham- bine hydrochloride; Indicated for sexual feebleness of psychogenic origin." It seems likely that at the time this work was performed the product was believed to be an aphrodisiac.
